How to Make Tulsi Plant Bushy: Do you want your Tulsi plant to grow bushy, healthy, and full of green leaves? Tulsi is a perennial and hardy plant; with a little care, it will stay healthy and green in your garden all year round.

In my garden, Tulsi has always been more than just a plant—it’s a sacred herb, a symbol of purity, health, and natural healing.
Over the years, I have been following some easy methods to keep Tulsi growing lush and strong. Here’s how I care for my Tulsi plant, and how you can do the same!
7 Tips To Make Tulsi Plant Bushy
Tip 1. Prune and Pinch Regularly to Make Tulsi Bushy
Do you know?
Regular pruning and pinching make tulsi plant bushy and healthy.
Yes, you read it right. What I do:
- I gently pinch the top growth of my Tulsi plant every 10 to 15 days.
You should know this fact:
Tulsi plant primarily grows from its tips, so pruning or plucking from the tip stimulates the emergence of 2-3 new shoots, leading to the development of new branches and leaves. This promotes overall plant growth, resulting in a bushier, more productive plant.
- So, regular pruning is crucial for shaping your Tulsi plant and encouraging new growth.
Tip 2: Choose the Right Pot Size

I always grow my Tulsi plant in a minimum 12-inch clay pot.
Why clay pots?
- They are ideal for Tulsi’s growth.
They allow better aeration for the roots.
Clay naturally absorbs excess moisture, preventing overwatering.
The soil stays cool and breathable, which is great for healthy root development.
My Tip:
- Avoid using small or plastic pots.
- A small pot restricts root growth, causing the plant to remain weak or dry out quickly.
- A spacious pot promotes the growth of a strong and bushy Tulsi plant.
Tip 3: Remove Flower Buds (Manjaris) To Make Tulsi Bushy

Did You Know?
If you regularly remove the flower buds (Manjari’s) from your Tulsi plant, it will grow more densely, remain healthy, and have a longer lifespan.
How I Care:
I remove flower buds (Manjaris) of my Tulsi plant regularly as they appear.
This simple practice has several benefits:
- it delays flowering,
- the plant continues to produce leaves for a longer period, and
- the Tulsi plant remain healthy and bushy.
Tip 4: Keep the Soil Loose and Well-Aerated
Did you know?
Tulsi plant thrives in well-draining, loose soil.
But most gardeners don’t pay attention to this.
How I care for my Tulsi plant:
Every 15-20 days, I gently till the top layer of the soil.
What this does: Loosening the soil allows:
- air to reach the roots,
- improves water and nutrient absorption,
- prevents soil compaction,
- and promotes strong, deep root growth.
Secret tip to make Tulsi bushy
Do not shift your Tulsi plant unnecessarily.
- Tulsi plants adapt to their surroundings.
- Moving them from one place to another often causes stress and can hinder their growth.
What I do:
- I chose the right location for my basil plant and left it there so it can grow well.
- I only move it when necessary, such as during the extreme summer or winter season.
Tip 5: Keep You Tulsi plant in a Sunny Spot
Tulsi is a plant that loves sunlight, and it grows best in direct sunlight.
Where I keep my basil plant:
- I keep my Tulsi plant in a sunny balcony where it receives 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight every day.
Therefore, you should also place your Tulsi plant in an open balcony, terrace, or garden where it can get 5 to 6 hours of direct sunlight.
Tip 6: Water Only When Needed
Watering is essential for keeping a Tulsi plant bushy and healthy.
Many gardeners make mistakes here. They don’t know the right way to water a basil plant. Some people overwater it, while others underwater it. Both overwatering and underwatering can harm the plant.
How I give water to my Tulsi plant:
- I water my Tulsi plant only when the top layer of soil is completely dry.
This prevents root rot and ensures the plant receives the right amount of moisture.
Tip 7: Nourish your Tulsi plant with Organic Fertilizer
Organic fertilizer keeps your Tulsi plant bushy and healthy. Do not use chemical fertilizers, as they can damage your plant and inhibit the growth of the basil plant.
How I give organic fertilizer to my Tulsi plant:
Every 2-3 weeks, I give :
- Cow dung liquid fertilizer,
- Groundnut cake liquid fertilizer,
- Vermicompost tea,
- Or homemade kitchen compost.
This ensures that the plant remains healthy, lush, and strong throughout the growing season.
