Spring is not just another season in gardening. For me, it is the most important time for our plants.
In spring, our plants start to produce fresh green leaves and new shoots. This is the perfect time when we grow new plants in our garden – whether they are grown from seeds or purchased from a nursery.
There are two main reasons why spring is so important.
(i) First, it is the best time to recover our plants that became weak or stressed during winter.
(ii) Second, summer gardening actually begins from spring season.
- Whatever preparation you do now will directly affect how your plants growth in the coming summer months.
In this article, I am sharing the 10 most important gardening tasks you must complete during spring.
10 Important Tasks to do in Spring Season
1. Know the Right Time
Generally, the spring season in India starts from February and continues till March. However, February does not always mean spring season.
- You need to identify when the spring season starts and when is the right time to do pruning and hard pruning of your plants.
How to ensure, spring season has arrived? Check for two points:
(i) Observe your plants – When you see new leaves, fresh buds, and active growth in your plants that means spring has truly arrived.
(ii) Feel the weather – You will also feel that the cold has reduced. You will wear less woolen clothes than before.
These signs indicate that spring has arrived, and it’s the best time for root pruning, hard pruning, which is usually avoided during the summer months.
2. Check all winter plants
First, check all your winter plants carefully.
- If they are growing well, do not remove or disturb them.
- If some plants are in poor condition, wilted, or damaged, remove them.
3. Collect Soil from garden
It’s time to find out how much soil we have in our garden.
- Why is this important – because at this time we grow new plants, sow seeds or repot plants, so for all these activities we need soil.
What I do:
- I collect soil from everywhere, whether it’s leftover potting soil or soil from damaged plants.
- I collect it in a large rectangular bag and expose the soil in the sunlight for 3 to 4 days.
- Sun exposure helps kill any fungus, disease, or insects, making the soil safre for reuse.
4. Check Summer Plants
Now, inspect all your summer plants like Tulsi, Curry leaf, Hibiscus, Aparajita, Parijat (Night blooming Jasmine), Jasmine (Mogra), etc.
Observe each summer plant carefully, and do the treatment accordingly:
- some plants may require both root pruning and hard pruning,
- some needs only light pruning,
- some plants might benefit from repotting,
- And some plants may be in excellent condition and require no treatment.
5. Remove Weeds, Loosen Soil & Add Compost
We do not take much care of our plants during the winter, and this causes unnecessary weeds to grow everywhere in the pots.
First, remove all unwanted weeds from every pot. After this, loosen the top layer of the soil so air can reach the roots.
- After that, add compost like vermicompost or kitchen compost to the soil.
- Afterward, water thoroughly; this will improve the soil’s health and strengthen your plants.
6. Collect Seeds from Your Garden
Spring is the best time to collect seeds from your garden. You can collect seeds from plants like Clitoria, Parijat (night-blooming jasmine), Vinca, and others.
- Just let them dry and store them. You can sow these seeds to grow more new plants.
7. Sow Seeds for Summer Plants
This is the time to sow flower, vegetable, and fruit seeds for summer. The temperature during spring is ideal for seed germination (around 15°C to 25°C).
Important Note:
- If you delay sowing this time, plants may not grow properly before peak summer.
8. Propagate plant through Cuttings
Propagation is much easier in spring, and the success rate is higher. Because this time plants produce new leaves, buds and shoots, so cuttings develop roots faster.
- You can take cuttings from both indoor and outdoor plants. With proper care, most cuttings grow successfully during spring season.
So, use this season wisely and multiply your favorite plants.
9. Change Your Garden Layout
I always rearrange my garden in spring. This is very important task during spring season. Your plant growth depends on many factors and this is one of it.
How I Change My Garden Layout in Spring
1. I shift all my summer plants to a sunny spot so that they receives maximum sunlight.
2. I move winter plants to a semi-shaded area, because now temperature will rise and they do not need strong sunlight.
3. Plants that prefer bright light, I move such plants to a shaded area.
4. I always make a separate area for vegetable plants so they have enough space to grow properly and stay organized.
5. I set up a different space for soil storage and composting to keep the garden neat and easy to manage.
6. I always keep garden tools and fertilizers in a shaded area so they remain protected from direct sunlight and heat.
You can also follow these simple garden layout changes in spring. This help your plants grow healthier and stronger throughout the season.
10. Keep Garden Supplies Ready
As soon as spring season arrives, our gardening work increases. Make sure you have all the basic gardening tools, spray bottles, compost, coco peat, soil, and other important materials ready.
If anything is missing, arrange it in time. When everything is organized, your gardening work becomes easier and stress-free.
