I have shared my experience of making organic rich soil mix for rose plants. Please follow these tips and make your plant healthy and flourishing.
1. Take Garden Soil for base
- First step is to take good quality soil from your garden as a base for soil mixture.
- It should be loamy and well-draining.
- Avoid heavy clay soils.
- Now clean your garden soil, remove all the debris, glass and plastic pieces that may hinder the proper growth of the plants.
2. Add Compost to increase the organic matter in the soil
- Second step is to add compost (vermicompost or cow-dung compost) in the soil.
- Quantity – It should be 1/2 (half) the quantity of the garden soil.
- Compost enriches the soil with nutrients and improves structure of the soil.
3. Add Sand for drainage improvement
- Third step is to add sand to improve drainage.
- Quantity: It should be 1/2 (half) the quantity of the garden soil means equal amount of compost.
4. Add Coco peat for moisture retention
- Fourth step is to add Coco peat in the soil.
- Quantity: It should be 1/4 of the quantity of soil.
- It helps retain moisture in the soil and improves its texture.
Note:
- Roses benefit from a soil mix that can retain moisture without being too soggy.
- Adding coco peat to the soil helps maintain moisture levels, ensuring roses get the water they need and preventing root rot.
5. Add Neem Cake powder: to prevent soil borne insects
- Fifth step is to add little bit of neem cake powder in the soil mixture.
- Adding Neem Cake Powder to the soil mixture provides natural protection against fungal infections and soil borne insects and pests.
6. Add Fungicide – to prevent fungal infections
- Sixth step is to add small amount of approx. 3 -4 gm of fungicide in the soil mixture.
- Fungal problems, such as powdery mildew or black spot, can be a common concern when it comes to caring for rose plants.
- Adding a fungicide to the soil mix is a good option to prevent fungal infections.
7. Add Bone meal – optional
- You can also consider adding a bone meal if you wish.
- Bone meal is a good source of phosphorus, which is beneficial for root growth and flower production in roses.
- It also contains calcium, which can help improve soil structure.
