I believe winter is the best season for gardening, and there are many reasons for it.
Perfect weather: It’s neither too hot nor too humid. The cool weather keeps both you and your plants comfortable.
Less watering needed: You do not need to water frequently as the soil retains moisture for a long time.
Vegetable abundance: You can grow variety of vegetables from herbs to root crops.
Blooming season: You have a variety of flowering plants to choose from, and you can get them at a cheap rate from nurseries.
Fewer pests: We enjoy gardening more in this season due to less harmful pests and diseases.
More gardening time: You can happily spend long hours in your garden as the sun and weather are pleasant in winter.
Winter Vegetables to Grow at Home
Growing your own vegetables in your garden brings a unique sense of satisfaction and joy. There are many vegetables you can grow in winter – I’ve shared a list of some.
Herbs to grow in winter season –
You can grow a variety of herbs in the winter season. For the best results, always use the good quality and fresh seeds.
- Coriander (Dhaniya)
- Spinach (Palak)
- Fenugreek (Methi)
- Amaranth (Chaulai)
Expert tip:
- These herbs needs medium sunlight to grow.
- The soil should be light (do not use hard and compact soil) and it should be well-drained,
- sow directly in the pot,
- It is recommended to use Rectangular boat-shaped pots for herbs vegetables,
- always maintain slight moisture and,
- trim regularly to encourage new growth.
Roots vegetables to grow in the winter season
- Radish (Mooli)
- Carrot (Gajar)
- Beetroot (Chukandar)
- Onion (Pyaj)
- Garlic (Lehsun)
Expert tip:
- I recommend use 12*18 inch grow bags for root vegetables which should be use – deep and wide.
- Soil should be loose, soft and well-drained.
- Place in a sunny spot, once seedlings grow.

- Tomato (Tamatar)
- Cabbage (पत्ता गोभी)
- Cauliflower (फूल गोभी)
- Capsicum (Shimla mirch)
- Chilli (Mirchi)
- Brinjal (Baigan)

Expert tip:
- These vegetables needs good sunlight to produce fruits.
- For beans, tomato, capsicum, and chili – provide support like bamboo sticks.
- Keep in a sunny spot and use well-drain soil.
- Always use organic fertilizer for best results.
- I suggest keeping 4-5 pots or grow bags for each type of vegetables, as one pot will only grow 5-6 vegetables and that will not be enough.
- If you have a limited area than you can grow at least 2 pots or grow bags.
Winter Flowers to Grow for a Colorful Garden
Winter is the season for colours. When it comes to growing flowers in winter, you have many options to choose from. These flowers fill your garden with color and fragrance and also attract many pollinators like bees, butterflies, and birds.

You can also grow some flowers from seeds; try this if you’re an expert grower; otherwise, it’s better to buy directly from a nursery.
- It is better to grow flowering plants in pots and not in grow bags.
